Studies are conducted to evaluate geologic hazards as required by governing agencies. These include seismic shaking, surface faulting, liquefaction, seismically-induced settlement, flooding, breached levees, and volcanic eruptions.
Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zone Act and Bay Area agencies require a fault investigation if the hazard of surface rupture is justified. The fault investigation is conducted in an effort to mitigate damage to new development and structures. Results of the investigation help to determine if the danger of fault rupture exists and mitigating recommendations.
Typical surveys include ground-penetrating radar, magnetometer, downhole seismic P- and S-wave, electro-magnetic surveys, dc-resistivity, and rock rippability study using seismic refraction.
